FOOTBALL.

MEETING OF SUB-UNION.

A meeting of the Foxton SubUnion was held last night. Present : Messrs Hadfield (vicepresident, in the chair), Hynes, Anderson, Dunn, Robinson, W. Cook, Wanklyn, O. Cook, Curtis and Whibley. A protest was received from the Albion Club against the last Awahou - Albion senior match being counted as a draw. The ground on which the appeal was based was that the referee was at fault in not allowing a goal from a free kick.

After some discussion it was decided that the appeal be not upheld and the deposit returned to the Ablion Club. It was also decided that in all cases of kicks at goal the referee be requested to point out the exact spot from which the kick is to be taken.

The referee in last Saturday’s senior fixture Awahau v. Manawatu reported as follows; “I regret having to report to the sub-union that during the progress of the football match, Awahou v. Manawatu, on Saturday, 17th inst. I was compelled by section 3, subsection (b) p 20, N.Z. Referees’ Association Hand Book of 19x0, to order one Manawatu player, by name Burgess, off the ground for wilful obstruction with foul play, after having been penalised for the offence on more occasions than one. The said player was guilty of wilful obstruction, foul shouldering, and using his elbow for foul purposes, and I considered his tactics were too dangerous to allow him to continue playing. Further, I have to report that on account of my decision in the above mentioned case, the Manawatu team did, at the instruction of their captain, leave the field of play, refusing to continue.” The case of the player ordered off the field was first dealt with and it was decided to caution him.

In reference to the team leaving the field, the captain was present, and from the statement received from him it appeared that had he, at the time, realised the seriousness of his action in taking his team off the field be would not have done so.

The meeting impressed on him that this was a matter that should not be lightly treated but under the circumstances it was decided to let the team off with a caution.

The secretary was instructed to write to Dr. Adams asking him to re-consider his decision in regard to officiating as referee in the future.

Mr A. K. Drew was appointed referee for Saturday’s senior match.

It was decided to play the Manawatu-Albion match, postponed from the nth instant, on July 2nd and Mr A. K. Drew was appointed referee.

It was decided to start a third class competition, the first match to be played next Saturday. After arranging details in connection with next Saturday’s match the meeting rose.

Saturday’s senior match, Awahou v. Albion, to be played on the racecourse, promises to be one of the best games played this year. Both Clubs will be represented by tbeir full strength and the match should therefore be a very close one

On the Showground, Palmerston N., yesterday afternoon, the annual Rugby match between Wanganui College and Te Aute College was played in fine weather. Te Aute put a heavier team into the field, but the Wanganui lads were found to be superior in back play. Wanganui, with a strong wind in their favour, scored only six points in the first spell, these being obtained by two place-kicks by Hives. In the second spell Te Aute had a decided advantage, and Wallace scored from an opening made by Jacob. Hives then scored for Wanganui, and Te Aute obtained three points lor a penalty, Cooper kicking a goal, and for a try by Kingston. The winning try for Wanganui was scored by Hives, and was converted, the final scores being: Wanganui, 14 points; Te Aute, 9.
