WATER SUPPLY FROM LEVIN.

— * DISCUSSION HELD OVER. UNTIE NEXT MONDAY. At last night’s Council meeting a letter was read from the Eevin Town Clerk, advising thac he had been directed by his Council to say that having satisfied itself that there is an ample supply of water for both towns, for very many years to come, the Council is prepared to supply Foxton from the Eevin mains tor the sum of sixpence per rOOO gallons. He also stated that the Mayor of Eevin and the Councillors would be very pleased if the Foxton Councillors could appoint a day to come over and see the head works, etc. The Town Clerk reported that at the request of the Mayor, he had gone into the offer ol the Eevin Borough Council to supply water to the Foxton Borough, at sixpence per 1000 gallons. Taking Mr Climie’s estimate of 50 gallons per head per day, (and he had been informed by Mr Climie that this estimate is very often exceeded) for Foxtou’s present population only, estimated at 1500, he found that Foxton would use 75, 000 gallons daily or 27,375,000 gallons. This quantity at sixpence per 1000 gallons would cost more than sufficient to pay interest at the rate of 4 l /z per cent, on He had ascertained from Mr Climie that the main to Eevin (0 inch) would cost ,£15,000, the mains through the borough, ,£5,500, interest on which at 4J2 per cent, added to the cost of the water as above would be ,£1598 15s per annum. With a nine inch main there would be sufficient pressure for fire purposes. With a six inch main, which would only carry a third of the water that a nine inch main would, and would cost ,£IO,OOO, it would in all probability be found necessary to erect large storage tanks on an elevation, to get sufficient pressure for fire purposes. The Mayor said that he hadn’t gone fully into the question, as he could see by the price asked that it was quite out of the question to even consider it. He was satisfied however, that the Eevin Council was prepared to re-consider the matter. He suggested that it should be discussed at the special meeting to be held next mouday evening.—This course was agreed to.
