NEW ZEAEAND V. NEW SOUTH WALES. WIN FOR THE ALL BLACKS. The New Zealand team in Australia opened its tour on Saturday by handsomely defeating New South Wales at Sydney.

The All Backs won the toss. Scrum work in midfield followed, and the visitors forced into New South Wales’ 25. Play hovered there some time, and some smart forward work was stopped by Ryau. Then Patterson picked up cleverly and made a fine run, but was smothered. Level play followed, the visitors playing a bright, nippy game, with plenty of combination. The blues intercepted a blacks’ pass at midfield, but the blacks got going again and Patterson, breaking away passed to Roberts, who transferred to Mitchiuson who was pushed out in the cornerThe ball came out to Roberts, who, from the line-out potted a goal.—All Blacks 4 —New South Wales nil.

The blacks kept things moving well within the home 24. Mitchiuson took a cross kick from Dwyer, and the ball was dribbled across and Patterson scored the first try of the match. More even play followed. Woods, Widmer, Reynolds and Hodgens made a fine passing run but a knock-on cut the effort short, and then Roberts, gathering nicely and going on attended by the latter scored near the corner. The shot at goal went wide. —All Blacks 18—New South Wales 5.

Play slowed up for a time, the blues doing most of the attacking. Wilson relieved and the blues attacked again. Mynott getting hold of the ball carried the game to the home 25, where Patton had a fruitless shot at goal. The Maoris defeated Queensland at Brisbane by 13 points to 8. Tries were secured by Tamu, Rawiri (both of which Winiata failed to convert) and Takarangi kicked a goal from a mark, and Hall potted a goal.

The Northern Union game British v. New South Wales, was witnessed by 25,000 spectators at Sydney on Saturday. The visitors were victorious by 25 points to 10.
