ARTESIAN WATER FOR FIBRE TREATMENT.
Last .Saturday Mr Chryslall finished sinking an artesian bore for the N.Z. Hemp Process and By-Product Company, Ltd., and has secured a good flow of firstclass water. The well is sunk on the Company’s property in Purcell Street, to a depth of 193 1 / 2 feet. The first flow was struck at ISS feet, and gave a supply of about ten gallons per minute. It was decided to continue boring, and after going a further 8/z feet a supply of 20 gallons per minute was obtained, which flows three feet above the sruface. The water is a first-class sample, being entirely free from iron. It has been stated that artesian water is not suitable for washing fibre, as it discolours it. Our representative was shown by Mr Richardson, the technical director of the Company, several hanks which had been taken direct from the stripper, boiled for four hours in water from this new bore, allowed to remain in the water all night, and afterwards bleached. The fibre thus treated was of an excellent colour, and proves that artesian water is equally as suitable—if not more so —for hemp washing purposes as any other water.
