ANTARCTICA.
THE FRENCH EXPEDITION
Pakis, February 15
Further details of Dr. Charcot’s French Antarctic expedition in the “Pourquoi Pas?” (which has returned to Puuta Arenas) show that Dr. Charcot completed the map to Adelaide Islaud (which lies off the coast of Graham Land, south of the islaud bearing the name of the explorer Biscoe). Dr Charcot surveyed a new land 120 miles long before wintering at Petermann Island. During the second Antarctic summer he explored the South Shetland Islands, and then went south of Alexander I Land.
Early iu the voyage collisions with bergs caused a leak in the vessel, which it was impossible to repair. Water was entering at the rate of two tons an hour, and this necessitated pumping throughout the voyage. The crew suffered from scurvy and heart trouble.
