A GUN EXPLODES.

IN A VICTORIAN FORT,

ELEVEN MEN INJURED,

Melbourne, January 14,

During practice operations at Point Nepean, a shell from a gin. gun (with a 641 b charge of gun powder) exploded, wounding thirteen men. The injuries are only slight in the majority of cases. The injuries received were as follows: Lieut. Anderson, concussion and injuries to eyes; Sergt. Hardy, fracture of arm ; Sergt. Scott, injuries to eyes; Gunner Wilkinson, injuries to head; Gunner Mouchmore, injuries to eyes ; Gunner Hartney, injuries in the region of the heart; Gunner Finch, injuries to hip; Corporals Britwell and Dyke, Gunners Davern, Cook, and Slattery, contusions and shock.

Gunner Finch has been sent to the hospital. Gunner Hartney has developed serious symptoms. Lord Kitchener paid a visit of inspection to the forts, and from aboard a steamer watched firing operations against a suppositious attacking fleet. He afterwards visited the camps of the land forces and keenly watched operations.

The injured gunners are progressing satisfactorily. The gun that exploded was an old one, and had beeu at the forts for twenty years. It is suggested that the accident was caused by the lock becoming defective through wear. A board of officers has been ap« pointed to enquire into the explosion.

Loid Kitchener has expressed his regret at the disaster.
