HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A general meeting of members of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held in Mr M. Perreau’s rooms on Tuesday last. About 20 odd members were present and Mr Alex. Speirs (President) occupied the chair. The interim balance - sheet showed a substantial profit". It was decided to grant the secretary a bonus after the autumn show. The notice of motion altering rule 4 to*read “that the society’s financial year shall commence on the ist day of May and end on April 30th,” was carried. A notice of motion altering the price of entrance fees for exhibits as under was agreed upon : For prizes under in value, 6d each entry ; over £1 is, is ; after 10 entries, free; for exhibition, free. A lengthy discussion took place in reference to the awarding of prizes in classes limited to one or two entries. It was resolved to amend the rules to judges in this respect, giving them the power to award prizes in special cases only after consulting with the committee.

It was decided to bold the Autumn Show on March 9th and xoth. It was pointed out that a later date would clash with the Ea;ster holidays and the Levin Show.

It was decided not to award a first prize for any exhibit in any class unless there were three entries, and no second prize unless over that number. This alteration created a considerable discussion, the ladies being of opinion that such a rule was too stringent, but it was explained that the judges had the right alter consulting the committee to award prizes in exceptional cases. The following committee was set up to arrange the catalogue for the Autumn Show : Mesdames Stewart, Galland, Adams, Misses Speirs, and Ross, .Messrs Woods, Kempster, Hornblow, Newth, Galland, Bullard, President and Secretary. The committe to meet on Wednesday evening next. This concluded the business of the evening.
