PRESENTATION.
At the Horticultural Society’s meeting, held in Mr Perreau’s rooms on Thursday evening, a very pleasing ceremony took place, when the president, Mr Alex, Speirs, was the recipient of a handsome gold medal suitably inscribed, as a mark of esteem and appreciation from the members. The presentation was made by Mr Levett, the secretary, who stated that Mr Speirs was considered an ideal president. He had spared neither money nor time in furthering the interests of the Society, and his courteous and obliging manner to all concerned was much appreciated. On behalf of the members he asked Mr Speirs to accept' this token of esteem (applause). Mr Speirs, who was taken by surprise, thanked the members for their expression of appreciation. An institution of thisnalure he said, was beneficial to the town, and encouraged habits of thrift and created a desire on the part of townspeople* to beautify their homes. The Society is having a very beneficial effect on the town. All connected with the Society worked with one end in view and there were no axes to grind. He was sure the Society filled a much felt want in the . town and it had come to stay. Refreshments were then served and an enjoyable time spent. The medal has a pretty floral device on one side encircling which is the name of the Society, and the inscription appears on the obverse side.
