WANTED—CLOSER SETTLEMENT.
The Government could acquire several thousand acres ot first and second class Native and European land in this district for closer settlement, which would greatly add to the prosperity of the Mauawatu. Too much land is held by too few owners in this district, and there is far too much land monopoly in evidence. Only recently we saw a smiling homestead of 100 acres, which should keep a family employed and add to the wealth of the borough, pass into the hands of a large land-owner. Other instances of aggregation have recently come under our notice and yet we are powerless to prevent it unless the State steps in. The Government should put the screw on by still further increasing the laud tax. Give us land nationalisation every time in preference to the paw of the aggregatioualist. Anyhow, we ask our member to assist us—-and he has pledged himself to do so —to further closer settlement in this district.
