The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, November 23, 1909. HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
It is hoped that the second annual Show under the auspices of the local Horticultural Society, to be opened to-morrow, will meet with the success it deserves. We know of nothing which stimulates a greater interest in horticulture than a good show. A comparison of beautiful and varied blooms and vegetables and an interchange 0 ideas on cultivation by the exhibitors, is very educational. It also fosters a desire for the healthful and profitable hobby gardening. We hope local gardeners will not allow modesty to hinder them from sending along exhibits. As a result of the last show, many local homes have been wonderfully improved and beautified by the cultivation of flowers. We are informed that quite a number of outside entries are coming to hand, which augurs well for the future of the Society. We hope the Society will, in the near future, discuss the advisability of holding an autumn, as well as a spring show.
The success of a show, in a large measure, depends upon the enthusiasm-of the executive, and in this connection the Foxton Society is fortunate. The president, Mr Alex. Speirs, is not merely a figure-head, but a real live worker and he has set his committee a splendid example of energy and enterprise. He finds an able backing in the secretary and committee. We look forward to splendid results from to morrow’s show.
