One hundred and fifty new Customs houses have been established on the Dutch frontier to combat the smuggling of tobacco and coffee due to the new German taxes.
Alexander Mouington, a wellknown piano manufacturer, recently obtained a divorce from his wife on the ground ot her adultery with Leou Souhani. The parties were friends and Mrs Mouington and Souhani eloped to Australia. Subsequently Fouhani returned expecting to inherit his father’s estate of ,£50,000, but found that he had been cut off with 5s because of his misconduct.
Melbourne, Oct. 16
At Bendigo the Governor (Sir Thomas Gibson Carmichael) presented Davies, who heroically rescued a fellow-miner at the Goldfields Consolidated mine, with an illuminated address, a cheque of £l7O, a gold medal and a certificate for bravery. In connection with the Federal Postmaster - General’s inquiries with a view to establishing a wireless system, it is understood that Admiral Sir Richard Poore (Commander -in - Chief of the Australian Squadron) has recommended the Marconi system.
