Messrs Harlaud and Wolff, ot Belfast, contemplate establishing ship-building yards in Canada. The Board of Trade Labour Department’s report show that a steady downward movement in wages began early in 1908. During the year 930,000 working peoples wages were reduced, and 1,092,586 suffered reduction during the first six months of 1909, entailing a loss in wages of ,£67,744 weekly. London, October 8.
One of Lemay’s hop warehouses at Southwark has been gutted by fire. Five thousand packets of hops were destroyed. The damage amounts to ,£60,000. Three other, of Lemay’s warehouses were untouched
Imports into the United Kingdom during September increased by .£1,449,000, exports increasdby ,£1,180,000, and re-exports increased by ,£1,176,000, as compared with September last year. The ship Edenmore, from Hamburg, is ashore on Stronsay, one of the Orkney Islands. The crew were saved. It is feared the vessel will become a total wreck. Berlin, October 8.
It is reported in Berlin that a syndicate of British and German cotton-spinners has acquired fifteen thousand acres of land in South-west Texas for division into small holdings for cotton farmers. Preference will be given to those of German origin.
