HOW SHACKLETON’S EXPEDITION WAS FINANCED.

Lieutenant Shackeeton has issued a statement with regard to the financial aspect of his recent Antarctic expedition, in order to correct the incomplete and inaccurate reports current on the subject. “Neither any member of the expedition or its leader benefits financially to the slightest degree as the result of my book, lectures, etc., until the whole liabilities of the.expedition are discharged,” he says. My supporters are various relatives and friends in this country—not in the United States as

has been declared—but, owing to the American financial stringency in this country, some of the money promised me did not become available. I went to several rich men, and they very generously guaranteed me at the bank to the extent of ,£20,000, on the understanding that the guarantees were to be paid off by me not later than July, 1910. The arrangement was that the bank should advance the money on the guarantees, and that I should pay interest. I cannot thank too much those who had faith in me when comparatively unknown. The position now is tint the guarantees to the extent of ,£20,000 have to be released, and this, I hope, will be done by the sale of my book and my lectures, and the money that my wife’s relatives and I myself and friends have contributed. Apart from this, of course, the cost of the expedition was far in excess of ,£20,000. I have not approached his Majesty’s Government in the matter, and it cannot justly be said, therefore, that they have declined to contribute. There was no American financial assistance towards the expedition. It was a British venture,;though from all parts of the world we have received congratulations and generous recognition. I fully realise that, as the leader of a private expedition, I have no claim on financial assistance from official sources.”
