WANTED GOODSSHED ACCOMMODATION.
Our attention has been directed to the totally inadequate accommodation provided at the local railway goods shed. The floor space is about half the size really required for the handling of goods and merchandise arriving at the port. Only yesterday space had to be begged from Messrs Eevin and Co’s, commodious premises for the storage of too tons of merchandise. The cramped space hampers shipping operations and causes delay and inconvenience to all concerned. This state of affairs has existed for some time and we are informed that the department has been communicated with privately on the subject. It Appears to be farcical and a sheer waste of time to make representations to departmental officers in reference to local pressing needs at the wharf. Replies to previous communications have been formal and disheartening. We start at the wrong end. Tap the Minister first. From what we know of Mr Millar he is not the man to pigeonhole requests without due enquiry into details. We suggest that the Chamber of Commerce confer with Mr Newman on the subject with a view of placing the facts before the Minister.
