HATPIN PERIL.
The officials at the Prefecture of the Police in Paris are (telegraphs the Paris correspondent of the Loudon Mail, on August 13th), considering what steps it is possible to take with a view to preventing the recurrence of the serious accidents caused by the murderous hatpins worn by women. Among the accidents iccently reported aie the following : A Government engineer a lew days ago was travelling on the top of an omnibus between the Madeleine and the Bastille when his right eye was pierced by a lady’s hatpin. Owing to a sudden jolting of the omnibus, the lady was thrown against him. Six days ago a shop-girl lost the sight of her left eye, owing to a lady customer suddenly leaning over the counter. An eight-uiontbs-old baby on its mother’s knee had its nose and cheek torn by a woman’s hatpin inside an omnibus. On the Metropolitan Railway last Sunday the tympanum of a man’s ear was pierced by an enormous hatpin. Over 50 such accidents have been registered by the police since June Ist. It is proposed to forbid women wearing hatpins, the points of which protrude, to enter any public vehicle or train. It is further proposed that no woman wearing a hatpin, the point of, which projects, shall be admitted to any place of public entertainment.
