THE SOUTH POLE.
London, September 25. Dr Bruce, the oceanographer and Polar explorer, is preparing for a Scottish expedition to the South Pole. If the sum of ,£50,000 is forthcoming, he will start before 1911. The expedition will consist of 36 men, including six scientists. It will carry oceanographical equipment to operate to a depth of 3000 fathoms. A wintering station will be established in Coats Land (on the Atlantic side of the Pole), whence a dash across the Antarctic continent will be made, finally emerging in Ross Sea, on the Pacific side. Dr Bruce’s theory regarding the mountain ranges suggests that the easier going by this route will compensate for the greater distance it involves as compared with Scott’s aud Shackletou’s routes.
