CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Secretary’s office last night. Present: Dr. Mandl (Chairman), Messrs Walker, Speirs, Rev. Aitken, Bullard, Levett and Rimmer. Correspondence in reference to the establishment of a Customs bond at Foxton was read from the Palmerston Chamber advising that they had decided to suspend supporting the Foxton Chamber's request to have Foxton constituted a port of entry for dutiable goods, until they received an answer from the Department in reference to the establishment ot a private bond at Palmerston N. From the Martou Chamber of Commerce, staling they would support the project, and had forwarded a request to the Minister of Customs. From Mr Edward Newman, M,P., enclosing a letter from Messrs McMurray and Co., offering the old post office building for a bond store at the same rental as they were paying, viz., £7 per annum.

It was decided to again write to the Trades’ and Customs’ Department urging the early, establishment of the bond, aud stating that it same were established the amount of duty paid at Foxton would be at least ,£20,000 per annum.

A letter was read from the Minister for Railways, advising that arrangements were now being made for the better lighting of the Foxton wharf. ■

Mr R. B. McKenzie, Carnarvon, wrote forwarding particulars of mail service from Foxton, asked for by the residents of Makowhai. —lt was decided to write to the Department, urging that the request be acceded to.

The communication from the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in reference to the formation of an Association of Chambers of Commerce, which had been held over from a previous meeting, was further discussed and it was decided to reply, stating that the Foxton Chamber favoured the project and would be prepared to join such an Association. The Treasurer reported a credit balance to date of £5 5s 2d. After discussing several minor matters the meeting terminated.
