CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A meeting of the council ot the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in the Secretary's office on Friday evening. Present: Dr Mandl (chairman), Messrs Rimmer, Speirs, Walker and BullardCorrespondence in reference to the establishment of a customs bond at Foxton, was read from the Trades and Customs Department, asking for information as to the quantity of goods —other than New Zealand produce —received annually at Foxton. From Mr E. Newman, M.P., forwarding copy of letter from the Customs Department, and stating that he had also interviewed the Minister on the subject.
From the Chambers of Commerce at Palmerston N., Feilding and Levin, asking for full particulars, and promising their support. From Messrs Goldingham and Beckett and Barraud and Abraham, in reference to the amount paid by them annually in duty.
It was decided that the Secretary communicate with the Palmerston Chamber, asking them to interview the merchants of that town and get information regarding the quantity of goods likely to pass through Foxton were a bond established. It was decided to send a copy of the Chamber’s letter to the Minister for Customs, and also a copy of the reply received trom the Department to the Chambers of Commerce at Feilding, Levin, Palmerston N., and Marton, and also to the Foxton Borough Council and the Foxton Harbour Board. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr R. B. McKenzie, asking for full particulars in reference to the establishment of a daily mail service between Foxton and Mokowhai. It was decided that the monthly meetings of the Chamber be held on the fourth Friday instead of the fourth Thursday as at present.
