SCULLING.

It has been known for some time that Mr Messena has been desirous of .seeing the “Dong Reach” recognised as achampiomship sculling course. This splendid stretch of water has been fully described in previous issues. Efforts were made to have the last Arnst championship event rowed here, but greater inducements were held out at Wanganui, although the Wanganui course is not in it with ,the “Long Reach” from a spectator’s point of view. To bring the new course under notice Mr Messena put up a deposit with the editor of this journal to back Whelch against Day on the Manawatu, for aside and the championship of New Zealand. Mr Messena cabled to Mr Coombes on Thursday, withdrawing the challenge in favour of a Great International Handicap Sculling Match to be rowed on the Dong Reach in the first week in December and to become an annual event. In addition to the stakes to be given each year there will be 20 per cent of the gate money, and to make sure that the public also will be protected the gate money is not to exceed 2s 6d per head, and river steamers, etc., will be arranged for on a similar basis. It is anticipated that Arnst, Champion of the World, and his brother, whom he is training, Webb, Fogwell, Whelch. Pearce, Day, and in fact all other prominent scullers, will be attracted to the event, and as a handicap is also being arranged at Wanganui for Christmas it will be an additional inducement to the foreign scullers to come to the Dominion.

Arnst and his party are to visit Foxtonwith their entertainment on the Wednesday, and the next day has been kept free for going over the course, when matters will be further discussed.
