A CHALLENGE.
Mr Alex Gray, of the Otaki Gorge, writes as follows to the Otaki Mail, under date August 9th : —‘T have often heard persons afflicted with “ beeritis ” declare alcohol an ideal food and drink, while others declare it is a poison. It never seems to strike either side to make a test case of it, but I am willing to deposit with the sporting editor of the Otaki Mail, backing myself for a week’s shovelling metal against any man that can put iu the week on ,£5 worth of beer only, by way of food and drink, while I will limit myself to 5s worth of potatoes and water. If I win the contest, I will give the enemy another run —biscuits and water v. biscuit and beer. If I am still the winner, I will come down to the muchdespised milk and water v. beer. I shall be 42 years of age next month, so I am about 20 years past my best athletic age, and I am not a navvy by profession.”
