CONTEMPT OF COURT.
A FINE OF Christchurch, August 11
At the Banco sitting at the Supreme Court this morning, before Mr Justice Denniston, Mr Stringer, K.C., acting for the Crown, moved, under Section 432 of the Crimes Act, 1908, for commitment for contempt of court of John Thomas M'Kinnon, manager of the weekly newspaper “Truth,” in respect to the publication by that journal of details of a certain case in the Magistrate’s Court on January 30 last, the Magistrate having made an order prohibiting publication. The offence was admitted.
His Honour, in giving judgment, 5 said the facts disclosed a deliberate and impudent contempt of the Court which heard the case. Defendant would be fined £IOO and costs.
His Honor added that had the writer of the article been before the Court he would have imposed a sentence of imprisonment.
