CRICKET.

THE FIFTH TEST. The fifth test match was commenced at the Oval on Monday. The weather was fine and the wicket fast. Hartigan, O’Connor, Whitty, Carkeek and Macalister were omitted from the Australian team. Noble again won the toss and sent his men to the wickets. The spectators numbered 25,960. The Australians made a very poor start, the first wicket falling with the score at nine, the second at 27, thud at 55, and the fourth at 58. Here Bardsley and Trumper became associated and a fine partnership ensued, bringing the total up to 176 before a separation was effected. Trumper being caught at mid-off. MacArtney and Bardsley carried the score to 259, when the latter lost his wicket. The innings closed with the score at 325, of which Bardsley contributed 136, Trumper 73, and MacArtney 50. Carr secured five wickets for 145 runs, Sharp three for 67 and Barnes two for 5 8< . , t England had lost two wickets for 40 when stumps were drawn for the day. The match was continued on Tuesday, when England , resumed their innings. The wicket was in excellent condition, and there was a large attendance. Rhodes and Fry, the not out men, got going very well, and brought the score up to 140, when Fry was run out. Sharp filled the vacancy. The fourth wicket fell at 187, the fifth at 201 and the sixth at 206. Here Sharp was joined by Hutchings and a fine partnership resulted, which brought the score up to 348. The remaining three wickets only added four runs to the score and the innings closed for 352—-27 runs more than the Australian’s first innings. Laver had to retire early in the innings, having snapped the muscles of his thigh. It is not expected that he will be able to play again this season. His place in the field was taken by Hartigan. Cotter bowled well, securing six wickets for 95 runs. The Australians in their second innings have scored 76 runs without the loss of a wicket.
