GENERAL CABLES.
Brisbane, August 10,
Various steamers sent to search for the German Government yacht Seestern, many weeks overdue on a voyage from Brisbane to New Guinea, have returned without finding any trace of the missing vessel. Paris, August 9. A goods train came into collision with a tram car at Longjumeau, twelve miles south of Paris. Eleven persons were killed and thirty injured. London, August 9. The “Jewish World” states that the Freemasons have started a movement to rebuild Solomon’s temple at Jerusalem. Freemasons throughout the world are to be asked to co-operate. London, August 10. A sad drowning accident has occurred off the coast of Scotland, resulting in the death of Mr Alan Fergusson (son of the late Sir James Fergusson, formerly Governor of New Zealand,, who was killed in the Kingston earthquake) and his wife and chauffeur. Mr Alan Fergusson and his party left Creetown, a small seaport village in Kirkcudbrightshire, in a motor launch. In the boat with him were his wife-, two friends, and the chauffeur. The launch caught fire owing to the upsetting of an oil stove used for cooking purposes, and all efforts to suppress the flames failed. Finally, the fire forced the party to leave the launch, and they were compelled to take the water, with life-belts on, two miles from shore.
Mr Fergusson, his wife, and the chauffeur were drowned. Their friends were saved.
