FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Foxtou Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (G- H. Stiles, Esq.) and Crs Ross, Rimmer, Speirs, Gibbs, Adams, Jenks and Levett. Mr P. T. Robinson, the newly elected councillor, signed the declaration, took his seat, and was welcomed to the table by the Mayor. Correspondence was read as follows : From seedsmen in Wanganui, Wellington, and Palmerston N., forwarding list of shrubs they consider suitable for planting at the sides of streets, and also prices of same, —Decided to leave the selection of the trees to the Mayor, Cr Adams and the Town Clerk. From the Horowhenua County Council, forwarding a copy of resolution passed on the xoth ultimo, drawing the Foxton Borough Council’s attention to the manner in which their metalling contractors are cutting up the County roads between Shannon and the Shannon-Foxton Bridge, and asking the Council to protect their interests in all future contracts. —Decided to inform the Horowhenua County Council that this Council is not having , any metal carted from Shannon.

From Mr Bruce Withers, asking permission to lower part of bridge in front of his section. — Decided to grant the request, provided that all bare sand is covered with the turf taken off. From the Palmerston North Borough Council, advising that they are prepared to supply broken metal at 7s per yard, and screened metal at 10s per yard on trucks at Terrace End. At present they cannot quote for tarred metal. From the Secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, forwarding copy of minutes of meeting of the Executive held on the 7th ultimo. From Mr J. R. Stansell, exmayor, agreeing to present an enlarged photo of himself to the Council, to be hung in the Council Chamber.

From John Chrystall, forwarding list of substances passed through in sinking artesian bore in triangle at north end of Main Street.

From Mesdames C. J. and E. H. Barber, asking Conucil to fill up water holes in front of their houses, in Robinson Street, and also to form a footpath with kerbing.—Decided to fill up water holes, and also that the corner of Easton and Robinson Streets be kerbed the same as the corner of Robinson and Park Streets.

From the Secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand, in reference to a superannuation fund for the benefit of employees of Councils, etc., asking how many would be likely to join, and also what amount the Council would contribute towards the funds.—Decided to write for all particulars re same. The poundkeeper reported that during the month of July, 25 head of cattle, 16 horses and 21 sheep had been impounded by the ranger and that driving fees amounting to £1 4s had been collected ; two horses had also been impounded by settlers. Accounts amounting to ,£206 12s gd, were passed for payment. Cr Jenks was appointed to sign cheques vice Cr Rae-Howard resigned. The ranger attended and tendered his resignation. —Accepted from September 13th ; fresh applications to be called for the position. Cr Adams brought up the question of stock being allowed to graze in Victoria Park. He said that a mob of sheep had been allowed to graze in the Park and had eaten down a number of the trees which had been planted on Arbor Day. He moved that no person be permitted to graze stock in Victoria Park. The motion was seconded by Cr Levett and carried.

It was decided on the motion of Cr Speirs seconded by Cr Ross that the request of the residents in Reeve Street for a street to connect with Johnston Street, which had been before the Council on a previous occasion, be again referred to the Works Committee. It was decided that the Public Works Committee meet on Thursday at xo o’clock to inspect and report on necessary work.

It was decided ou the motion of Cr Rimmer seconded by Cr Gibbs, that the roadmen clear the mud off and sweep clear the crossings in Main Street suitable for foot traffic ; also, that the rubbish from water tables be cleared and taken away, and that the worst places in footpaths leading to business premises be repaired with limestone. The resolution passed on June loth altering the boundaries of the nightsoil area was rescinded and the following motion was carried. — That the request of Messrs Aitken, Stewart, Morgan and Miss Duncan, that the Sanitation Area be extended to include their properties, be acceded to, and that a special meeting be called to pass a special order to make the necessary alterations in the present boundaries of the nightsoil area. Only one tender was received for the erection of fence, from Mr P. Sherrettat 10s, which was accepted, on the motion of Cr Speirs seconded by Cr Gibbs. It was decided that tenders be invited for the re-grading, tarring, and sprinkling with limestone of the whole of the footpaths on both sides of Main Street.

A special meeting was held at the conclusion of the ordinary meeting when a special order, altering the boundaries of the night soil area, was passed.
