SHIPPING DISPUTE.

Sydnkv, July 25

A conference at Newcastle between the colliery proprietors, the shipping agents, and the waterside workers, to consider an objection by ships' crews to unloading ballast proved futile. Subsequently a meeting of the combined unions decided to refuse to do any further work unless an assurance is given that the crews will not be employed to unload ballast.

There is a probability that shipping operations at Newcastle will be brought to a standstill tomorrow, unless a compromise is reached.
