THE ARTESIAN BORE.

BORING TO CONTINUE,

At last night’s council meeting a report was read from Mr Chrystall, contractor tor sinking the experimental bore in Main Street. He stated that the nature of the substance passed through from 350 ft to 414 ft was sand, the last few feet being mixed with sea shells overlaying a seam of blue clay 44ft thick. Underneath this clay, in sand and fine shingle, at a depth of 458 ft the first flow of water to rise above the surface was obtained. The pipes are now driven to a depth of 51 1 ft 6in and are in the same vein of sand where the flow was struck. The water will rise from this flow 2ft Biu above the surface and will run about one gallon a minute. The contractor asked for permission to continue driving, as long as there is a chance of a stronger flow being obtained, and if the pipes will stand the strain. If a flow of 150 gallons per hour or over is obtained the Council to pay ns qd per foot for the distance driven over 500 ft. If on the other hand a stronger flow is not obtained the contractor to be paid for 500 ft only.

The matter was dealt with in committee.

It was decided on the motion of Cr Adams seconded by Cr RaeHoward, that the Council accept Mr Chrystall’s offer to drive further and that should there be a flow of less than 150 gallons per hour the Council pay as previously arranged for—sooft only. Crs Ross, Speirs and Gibbs voted against the motion.
