EARTHQUAKE IN FRANCE.
TWO VIOLENT SHOCKS. MANY DEATHS. Paris, June 13. Two violent earthquake shocks were felt throughout the Riviera and Marseilles. They caused great excitement in the. streets and cafes. Six towns in the department of Bouches-du-Rhone were plunged in darkness by the failure of the electric light, and the entire population of the towns were outdoors till dawn. Houses collapsed in several towns, and there were a few fatalities. Ships at Toulon strained their cables. The earthquake caused at least sixty deaths. VIEEAGES DESTROYED, The seismic wave lasted from 9.15 to 9.40, There were four shocks, luckily just before bedtime, otherwise there would have been hundreds of victims. Fifteen persons were killed at Eambese and the village ol Roques was entirely destroyed. Twenty bodies were found. PEOPEE BURIED IN THE RUINS. Several deaths are reported front St. Cannat, where many are still buried in the ruins. Every house in some streets is destroyed, and the damage is over a million francs. At Marseilles many people remained all night in the fishing boats, and 20,000 gathered on the quays. The troops are assisting in rescue work. The dead were mostly killed while sleeping.
