SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
Whether he wins or loses his match with Webb, it is understood that Arnst is guaranteed out of the gate money. Both men are in excellent form, and they are actively training doing solid work for the encounter on the Wanganui River on June 22nd-. The race possesses more than passing interest locally because a portion of the ex-champion’s backing comes from Foxton. For some time past Mr S. Messena has closely watched Webb and the ex-champion has not a more enthusiastic supporter than our wellknown local sport. Mr Messena is endeavouring to arrange a match with Welch and an Australian on the beautiful stretch of water in the Manawatu known as the “long reach.” . Mr Messena intends asking experts to inspect the course above-named. His only doubt as to the suitability of the course for such an important event is whether there is sufficient sculling room between the piers of the Whirokino bridge. Our readers may expect to hear more on this subject after the championship.
