RECOVERY OF DEBTS.
For some time past business men in Christchurch have been complaining pretty freely of the difficulty they experience in getting the assistance, of the Magistrate's Court to recover debts. They have a grievance against the law because they say it provided loopholes which enable rogues to evade payment of their debts. At the instance of the Chamber of Commerce, a meeting was held on Monday last, to discuss the matter, and a number of resolutions asking for amendment of the law were carried. The principal resolution, which sums up the altitude of the meeting, is as follows: —“That, as it is impossible in many cases tor retail traders and professional men to obtain in the Magistrate’s Court an order for the payment of debts incurred by persons who are in receipt of steady wages, this meeting of Christchurch traders is of opinion that immediate steps should be taken with a view to getting the law altered, so that magistrates shall be required, where it is proved that a debtor summoned before them earns over the sum of £2 per week, to give an order for the attachment of the wages of such debtor until the debt is discharged.” The meeting decided to ask the Parliamentary Committee of the Chambers of Commerce in Wellington to draft a suitable amendment of the law, and to seek the co-operation of the Employers’ Federation in bringing the matter before the Government.
