BOOKSELLERS, BEWARE!
There are certain classes of literature which self - respecting booksellers refuse to stock. They set morality before sordid gain. “Evil be to him who evil thinks” is a good motto tor the other fellow, likewise, “to the pure all things are pure.” But they can’t square those philosophic sayings in respect to a journal which thrives on and gloats over filth., Apropo, at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday, six booksellers were charged with selling copies of New Zealand Truth alleged to contain matter of an indecent nature. Mr Riddell. S.M., said the articles appeared in a newspaper which was sold indiscriminately, and in his opinion were indecent. Any bookseller who stocked the papers had a reas uable opportunity of learning their contents. Each defendant would be fined £i and costs, varying from 18s 6d to £3 ios. John Thomas McKinnon, manager of Truth, similarly charged, was fined £5 with £$ gs costs on one charge, and £i with £3 4s costs on the second. Notice of appeal was given.
