THE DRAINAGE SCHEME.

APPLICATIONS FOR ESTIMATES TO BE INVITEDAi ia-L night .. ra c>. letter .s weie reemveu Hum i.u.v.c civil engineers offering tUeir services to the Council to prepare a report on a water and drainage scheme tor the borough. The Mayor said that it would be necessary to get an official plan of the borough,{showing the number of houses, levels etc. The plan they had at present was obselete and worn out. He suggested that the engineers be asked to state their price for preparing such a plan and furnishing a scheme lor water and drainage. He moved that the engineers named be asked to state the fee they would charge for preparing a plan of the borough, scale two chains to the inch, taking the levels of the borough and showing same together with all buildings upon the said plan. The map when finished must be mounted on cloth by the person preparing same and thereafter to be the official map of the borough, and further to furnish a scheme for a water supply and drainage system, covering the present night soil area. Applications together with the prices for the above work to be submitted to the Council on or before the 14th June. The motion was seconded by Cr Jenks. Cr Speirs said that it was a little premature to spring this subject on the new Council. Hesuggested adjourning the question until the following meeting, in order to give Councillors an opportunity to find out the qualifications of the engineers and get the best man possible to make the report. He did not think there was any necessity for taking the levels. Cr Ross suggested leaving the matter over for a week or so to consider it. He also thought that other engineers should be asked to give prices for the work. Other Councillors present were of opinion that it would be as well to get prices from as many engineers as possible and the motion with the addition of the words “ and other engineers not named also be asked to state their charge” was carried unanimously.
