The police estimates for 1908-9 showed a sura of ,£133,021 for salaries and expenses. Of this total the head office absorbs £2494. The nine district inspectors account for £3,720, six sub-in-spectors ,£1750, f our station sergeants and one sergeant-major ,£1204, 78 sergeants £12,652, 625 constables £94,717, four chief detectives £1,204, 34 detectives £7117, 10 probationers £1,095, native constables £582, 21 district constables £llBO, four matrons £4lO, four surgeons £4OO. Based on the population in New Zealand is one to 1331, at a cost per inhabitant of 3s 2}id, against 4s in Victoria, 5s rod New South Wales, 4s South Australia, 7s id Queensland, 9s 4d West Australia, and 3s rod Tasmania.
