Thk following tables of railway earnings for two four - weekly periods in January and February of 1908 and 1909 are instructive :—• January 1908. Miles open for traffic. Revenue. North Island 953 ,£113,288 South Island 1521 ,£121,197 January 1909 North Island nor ,£123,51 2 South Island 1542 ,£117,826 Thus, it will be the North Island revenue increased by £10,244 and the South Island revenue decreased by £3371. Taking now the figures for four weekly periods up to the end of February in each year, the comparisons are even more striking February 1908. Miles open for traffic. Revenue. North Island 953 £114,974 South Island 1521 £130,412 February 1909. North Island 1132 £136,151 South Island 1542 £127,664 These returns show that the North Island revenue, comparing February in each year, increased by £21,177, while the South Island revenue decreased by £2748.
