IRISH AFFAIRS.

London, Feb. 25

In the House of Commons, Earl Percy’s amendment to the Address-in-Reply deploring the prevalence of lawlessness in Ireland was negatived by 336 to 118. In reply to Sir E. Carson’s challenge, Mr Dillon declared that the Nationalist members of the House of Commons were willing to go to the disturbed areas and denounce and put down crime if they were authorised to promise the people that their legitimate grievances would be remedied. He added that the effectual way to suppress outrages would be the conferment of Home Rule on Ireland.

Mr Asquith, in reply to Mr Balfour’s strong protest regarding the prevalence ot organised crime, said he recognised the duty of enforcing the law, while aiming at bringing the Land Act more into harmony with the requirements of the people.
