AMERICA AND JAPAN.

IjJKW York, January 20. President Roosevelt telegraphed to the Governor of California to obtain a delay of action in regard to the proposed anti-Japanese legislation, pending the receipt of a letter.

The telegram added : “ The Government is greatly concerned with the reports. Subject to my knowledge of the international situation, I am satisfied that the legislation proposed would be of incalculable damage, both to California and to the whole Union.”

Later advice states that President Roosevelt’s telegram will probably result in a majority of the Californian Legislature deciding to defeat the anti-Japanese legislation on the ground tit national prudence.
