WIZARDS AT DINNER.

Black Magic Which Startled

the Waiters.

About 160 professional and amateur wizards attended the third annual banquet of the “ Magic Circle,” ", held at Frascati’s Restaurant, London, one night recently.

Before the banquet had proceeded beyond the entree course, the amateurs were already practising their black art-to the consternation of the waiters.

A gigantic and terribly realistic spider was released in some mysterious manner, and after hovering over a table, pounced upon a dish which was being borne in triumph by a waiter, with the result that the latter nearly dropped the delicacy.

Mr Nevil Maskelyne, who presided, said that the “Magic Circle” had been founded with a view to elevating the art of magic and raising the status of magicians as a class.

“The principal aim of the ‘ Magic Circle,’ ” he said, “is to bring about a clearer knowledge of the truth ; to prove, in fact, that a magician may bring to the service of his art as much intelligence, as much skill, as much education and as much artistic capability as any other artist.

“Indeed, the services to humanity freely and constantly rendered by magicians, in checkmating fraud and preserving public sanity, are without parallel in any other artistic calling.”
