ROSE WITHOUT THORNS.
A woman has succeeded where the “ nature magician ” of California failed. She is Mrs W. J. Beggs, of Seattle, and she has produced the first rose without thorns. The flower has the perfume of the American Beauty, and the stem is smooth and straight, like a lily, and can be handled by persons who have the tenderest flesh. Mrs Beggs says she has a secret, all her own, of training the rose bush so that it can bring forth the flower in all its beauty and fragrance and without the hitherto inevitable thorn. She promises to take the world into her confidence some day in order that, in suitable climates and soil conditions, the thornless rose may be grown freely. “ It is true that I have produced a thornless rose,” said Mrs Beggs, “ but I prefer to go beyond the experimental stage before making positive announcement of my success. lam not even certain that I can produce any more thornless roses, so I will not boast of my accomplishment. This rose may be an accident, and my system may uof. work always, sa I must defer making known the details of my system until I am quite sure. ”
