PREPARING FOR NO-LICENSE.
Soma Unpleasant Facts.
Quite recently the inhabitants of Waihi were startled with the information that two men had been arrested on a charge of having in their possession an illicit still, for the purpose of distilling whisky. This is only a beginning of what must be almost an every-day occurrence when No-license comes into force. It is only to be expected that with a population of nearly 7000 there are bound to be a few who are willing to endeavour to evade the law, and indulge in illicit trade, such as sly - grogselling and illicit stills. Notwithstanding the fact that a fine of or a penalty of two years' imprisonment is staring them in the face, men will indulge in these modes of business. This assertion is clearly demonstrated by the number of prosecutions and convictions which are recorded in No-Iyicense areas. It is also known that the liquor which is made in these illict stills is the most vile stuff ever placed before human beings for consumption, and when once a man gets more of this concoction than he should do, it is almost impossible for him to avoid developing “ D.T.’s” unless be can procure bromide Jot potassium, which is an antidote, but the cure is about on a par with the complaint. In the face of these facts it can hardly be denied that the illicit still is to be condemned with all the power possible, and it must be admitted that rather than have this evil to contend with, it would be preferable even to the Nolicense Teague to have the licensed house.—Waihi Times.”
