THE ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE.

Rome, January 16,

Troops at Messina worked for three days fruitlessly in places where cries for help were heard, only ceasing when the voices were silent.

Three million pounds worth of property has been recorded, also Greek sculpture and pictures in the Museum, and duplicates of the Civil Registrar. The rescuers at Messina found under the ruins yesterday a boy of nine, who told them his sisters, aged 20 and 12 years, were also alive.

Both were forthwith extricated

All had subsisted for 19 days on onions, wine, oil, dried figs and water.

Their mother was crushed to death, and their lather is in America.

Many bodies are still lying unburied in the streets, and the stench is terrible, although an immense quantity of disinfectants are arriving daily and being actively used.

London, January 16, The Mansion House relief fund now stands at ,£IOO,OOO.
