THE ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE.

The Chamber of Deputies cheered a statement by the Premier, Signor Giolitti, that Messina and Reggio would be rebuilt. The Chamber granted a million and a quarter sterling from the Budget surplus to provide for urgent needs and to reconstruct public buildings. It was also resolved to impose a surtax ou certain sources of revenue for two years. London, January 9.’ The Mansion House fund has reached ,£BO,OOO. Messrs Reeves and Coghlan, on behalf of New Zealand and New South Wales respectively, has received the Italian Government’s warmest thanks for generous donations.
Melbourne, January 9,
The Consul - General of Italy (Signor C. Bertola), in acknowledging the Commonwealth’s contribution to the earthquake fund, says:
“The Commonwealth Government has given most generous sanction to a most noble principle—a principle which ignores time and distance, is above race discriminations and prejudices of every kind, and is the true basis of civilisation. It has earned the everlasting gratitude of the warm-hearted people.”
