ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Wanganui, Dec. 20. A narrow escape from drowning occurred at Castlecliif Beach on Saturday afternoon. A young man named Brown got out of his depth, and was disappearing a third time when a companion named E. V. Spear rescued him. 1 Dunedin, Dec. 19. Henry Oswald, a bachelor, aged sixty, hanged himself in a coal house at Palmerston last evening. Christchurch, Dec. 19. Alice Gibson, 12 years of age, died suddenly in the street yesterday evening on her way home from the house of a friend she had been visiting. At the inquest to-day Mary Sophia Box stated that deceased left her place about dusk, and witness watched her running home for some distance. Deceased, who was not a robust child, appeared to be in her usual health. She was running very quickly. Dr Fenwick, who made a postmortem examination, was of opinion that death was due to sudden cardiac failure of a diseased hea rt. associated 1 with oedema of the lungs. The jury brought in a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony. Wellington, December 20. Yesterday morning a single man named Chas. Fairbairn was admitted into the hospital, suffering from burns. Fairbairn, who is 25 years old, is a seaman on board the s.s. Maori. No particulars as to how he received the injuries were available last night.
