WATER SUPPLY.
A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council will be held on Monday evening for the purpose of considering the question of an artesian water supply for the borough. There is a growing need for a town water supply, not only for domestic purposes, but also for fire prevention. We have, lime and again, referred to the lack of provision to combat the fiery elements should an outbreak occur in Main street, but no attempt has been made ti form a brigade, for the simple reason that there is no water supj'l/. Water is the first essential. When this is obtained a brigade will quickly come into being. The townspeople depend almost entirely upon their tanks for water. This means of supply is good enough in its way, but, unless householders are careful to keep their tanks clean from decaying vegetable matter, birds droppings, etc., a few days hot sunshine at this time of the year creates a scene of activity in the iron receptacles which would ‘'gca re” the heads of families were they enlightened on the subject. Well, we don’t want to scare people, but we need only refer to the local epidemic last summer. The point is : are ratepayers going to allow the health of their children to suffer for the sake of saving a few shillings per annum by way of rate to defray the cost of a water loan ? The Council’s first duty is to conserve the health of the residents. That being so, we feel sure the city fathers on Monday night will arrange for a trial artesian bore being sunk with a-view to further developments.
