The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, December 5, 1908.
Prior to the local licensing Poll rumours were floating round to the effect that If No-License were carried in Manawatu, a hotel or brewery would be erected outside the Foxton borough boundary and within the Otaki electorate. In view of such statements it is reassuring to know that the Premier, Sir Joseph Ward, is opposed to the proposal to establish a brewery on the confines of the electorate of Ashburton, and near the town of that name. Protests have been sent to him by the No-License party, and he states clearly that the proposal referred to is a very unwise one. The establishment of a brewery on the borders of a No-License district was never contemplated by the Legislature. It practically means a defiance of the law ; but there was no doubt that the thing could be legally done, “ I have no hesitation, however,” he said, “ in saying that it ought not to be done, snd that who ever proposes to take such a responsibility does so at his own risk. lam quite determined that the will of people shall be respected, and if a brewery is erected on the borders of Ashburton, Parliament will be asked to legislate to prohibit it.”
