ARTHUR S PASS TUNNEL.
A Complaint Refuted.
Christchurch, November 10. Some time back the miners at the Otira end of Arthur’s Pass tunnel complained that the water met with during boring operations was of a mineral nature, and acted injuriously on the hands of men. A sample of the water was sent to Mr A. A. Bickert jii. Government analyst, an in his repott, just received, he sta’es that the water is exceptionally pure, and free from any injurious matter. [ln October last at the Miners’ Conference in Wellington, various allegations were made concerning the conditions of affairs _at the tunnel works. It was claimed by the contractors that these were gross exaggerations, and the telegram above appears to beat this out. It certainly gives a flat contradiction to the assertion that the water in the tunnel had an injurious effect on the men working there].
