REDUCTION OF FREIGHT ON HEMP AND TOW.
Our representative interviewed MrH. Greig, president of the New Zealand Flaxmillers’ Association, this morning in reference to the continuation of reduced freights on hemp and tow by the shipping companies. When the association .first asked the shippers for the reduced freights, they decided to make the concession for the month of October of last year only. This the shippers stated was definite. Through the persistent efforts of the association represented by Mr Greig, the concession was extended from the first of November to December 31. Mr Greig stated that be received a communication m reply from the shipping companies, yesterday, to the effect that the concession would be further extended to October Ist of next year. He eulogised the action of the shipping companies which meant so much to all engaged, both employers and employees, in the hemp industry at the present time. He stated that the reduction in freight was equal to an advance in the price of hemp of ten shillings per ton, and of fifteen shillings per ton in the price of tow.
