TRAMWAY EXTENSION.
Feildlny Active
What will Palmerston Say?
‘At the annual meeting of the Feildicg Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night, the extension of the Foxtou-Saudon tramline to Feilding was discussed. Mr
Cobbe, in proposing that it be an instruction to the incoming Com-
mittee to do all in its power to have the Foxton-Sandon tramline ex-
tended to Feilding, pointed out that the matter had already been before the Chamber. Some time ago, when the subject was brought prominently before them, Mr J. Darragh had gone into figures, and he (the speaker) had seen the result of Mr Darragh’s calculations, and they certainly made out -a strong case in favour of the extension. Tbe Mt. Stewart riding of the Manawatu County, Mr Cobbe said came right into the town of Feilding, and if the extension were brought about, it would be of the greatest benefit to - the town and the whole district. With the improvements of the Foxton harbour, importers would be able to laud heavy goods in Feilding at a much cheaper rate than at present. The cost of the line would not be so great as might be supposed. There would be no resumptions of land
necessary, as there were two .county roads from Sandon to Feilding, and he believed the tramline could be laid along either qne. He pointed out that the line would run through a great grain-growing district, which would also enhance its value to Feilding. In speaking to the matter, the President (Mr Tolley) said if the line were extended to Feilding, it would be of immense advantage as far as the grain trade was concerned. He believed it would make Feilding the most important •grain centre in New Zealand. The motion was carried unanimously.
