LEVIN-FOXTON-GREATFORD RAILWAY.
Ih conversation with our re- • presentative the other day, Cr R. B. McKenzie, of the Manawatu County Council, said he * was somewhat surprised to read in the report of the last Council meeting as contained in a certain district paper, that he was going to boycott Palmerston, as a result of Palmerston’s attitude towards the agitation for the Levin-Foxton-Greatford railway. Mr McKenzie smilingly remarked that he didn’t suppose it would concern Palmerston business people very much if he withdrew his custom from that centre. He said he was not speaking personally at all. He referred to Palmerston’s attitude towards the proposed railway as that of the dog in the manger. The district had supported Palmerston in all its undertakings but when the district in turn wanted assistance Palmerston did not reciprocate. Palmerston, said Mr McKenzie, was no doubt the commercial centre for Manawatu and the proposed railway would not in any way injure it but if Palmerston was going to oppose any move-
meut which was for the advancemeut of the district, then as a .public man he would oppose giv- ; ing any support to their local institutions. Mr McKenzie, it may be mentioned, has for some years agitated for the above railway, and is in possession of quite a considerable amount of valuable data. We might add that the views expressed by our Palmerston.contemporaries does not reflect the bulk of public opinion in bur neighbouring town —not by a long way. 1
