Mr A. C. Matheson, manager of the Feilding branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has received notice of his promotion to the inspecting staff of the Bank, and will take leave of the Feilding branch at the end of August.

A Wairarapa paper states that William Webb, the champion sculler of the world, is lying seriously ill at Wanganui with pneumonia. This statement is incorrect. Webb has been suffering from an illness, but the Herald says he has so far recovered as to resume rowing, though he is not quite his old self yet, and will have to take things easily for some time.

‘‘ We shall have finished the rail-laying as far as we can go tomorrow,” said the Minister for Public Works on Thursday, in referring to the North Island Trunk railway ; “ but the Manganuiteao tunnel bridge will not be ready for rail-laying until Tuesday or Wednesday next and until then the rails cannot be laid.”

Mr J. A. Gilrutb told a Post representative that the press cable was the first intimation of his appointment to the Victorian professorship, which had been under offer to him some time ago. A reorganisation of the institute, which had been private hitherto, was taking place, and in future it would be under the control of the University of Melbourne with a Government subsidy. Evans, representing the British and Foreign Bible Society, will deliver a lecture in the Methodist Sunday School on Thursday evening next, on the Society’s objects and work.

We have been informed that under-sized flounders have been marketed locally. We warn local fishermen that they will incur a heavy penalty if convicted of this offence. The services in the Methodist Church to-morrow will be conducted by Mr Duncan Sinclair, of Palmerston North. The Rev. P. J. Mairs will conduct services at Moutoa at 2.30 p.m. The Palmerston Cycle Motor Co. announce elsewhere in this issue, that their Foxton ranch will be closed on or about the 15th inst. Mr Geo. Fowler will visit Foxton periodically. All outstanding accounts are requested to be settled. Mr Patterson, chemist, notifies that he has removed to more up-to-date and better appointed premises in Main Street, recently occupied by Mr Barnard. As Mr Patterson will now reside on the premises, prescriptions will be made up at any hour. The evening service at the local Presbyterian Church to-morrow will be conducted by, the Rev. G. K. Aitken, whose subject will be, “ Modern Socialism in relation to The choir will render the anthem, “ The Homeland,” and'Mr W. Cook will sing “ Calvary. ” The service, being of an interesting character, should prove attractive. It is semi-officially announced that the meeting at Reval between the Czar and M. Pallieres (French President) revealed a complete harmony of the views between France and Russia on all international topics. It is understood at Paris that Russia’s reform proposals concerning Macedonia remain in abeyance in view of the new situation in Turkey.

As the letter contained £3 he paid the amount to his friend rather than that they should have any doubt as to his bona fides in the matter. Now, after a lapse of five years, the missing letter has turned up at the house at which the young man left it, having lain restfully, all that time, behind a picture, where it had been placed for safety.—Standard.
