THE UNEMPLOYED.
No Distress in Chrfstohuroh. Christchurch, Friday. The Salvation Army’s soup kitchen opened to-day, for the alleviation of the unemployed in distress. A stiong force of Army officers and members were ready to serve out food at 11 o’clock. At half-past eleven no had appeared, but at that time a boy came with a message that his mother had five young children, his father had been out of work for nine weeks, and there was 10s , per week rent to pay, and they would be glad of soup and bread to save the children from hunger till the husband got work. The relief asked for would be only temporary. The boy was supplied with bread and soup, and an order, on a butcher for meat. At twelve, there being no further callers, the kitchen closed. The Brigadier says there is not anything like the distress agitators make out, but still there are deserving cases, and these the Army will relieve.
