VOLUNTEER MEETING.
Owing to the counter attractions last night, only a moderate number assembled at the Council Chambers to meet the District Adjutant, Captain McDonald. Mr Barnard was appointed chairman. Captain McDonald stated that while he was willing on behalf of the Government to give Foxlon’s application every consideration, he could not be expected on the strength of the present attendance to send foward a favourable report to the Council of Delence. In response to his request that some of those present would give reasons for the establishment of a corps in the town. Dr. Adams and Messrs Hamer, Barnard, and especially Mr Page, pointed out to the captain the importance of Fox ton as a seaport and defence centre, and urged him to do what he reasonably could to secure the acceptance of Foxton’s application. It was resolved to call a further meeting in a fortnight’s time when Captain McDonald kindly consented to be present and give to the proposed volunteers the information he had intended to give them at this meeting.
